«P-36 White Noise»
After discovering in the Parisian Meteorological Institute a drafting unit suitable for implementing his serial works in 1968, the painter and musician Manfred Mohr was one of the first artists to preoccupy himself with the computer. Operating with the snow visible on a viewing screen that is not receiving a signal, this work makes visible a line structure composed of random parameters with high information density.
P-036 «White Noise» (1971) belongs to the early period of algorithmic works by Mohr (1969-1972), in which he worked with automated and logical image constructions. He programmed his own algorithms which had different qualities and operated randomly—an effect he called «aesthetic filter»—thereby creating unique works each time.
