«Trampling on the Law»

The floor of a room in a group exhibition had been covered in the word ‘Recht’ (‘Law’), meaning the visitors who entered the room and looked at the objects became the actual executors of the poem. By walking over the words written on the floor, they fulfilled the meaning of the German phrase ‘to fly in the face of (literally: to trample on) the law’. The form and semantics of an art-work was first put into practice by this pragmatic (communicative) aspect. Without the viewer/user, no work would have existed. It was only produced by audience participation.
