 Humberto R. Maturana

b 1928 in Chile. Maturana studied medicine at the University of Santiago de Chile, and biology at London University. In 1958 he received a doctorate in biology at Harvard University, Boston (USA). Until 1960 he worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before accepting a professorship at the University of Santiago de Chile, focussing on the area of brain science. Together with Francisco Varela, he developed the term «autopoise» and the system theory of cognition. Maturana and Varela jointly published the books «Autopoiese and Cognition» (1971) and «The Tree of Knowledge: The Biological Roots of Human Experience» (1984).
