 Jack Smith

born 1932–died in 1989. A queer film artist, who was raised in trailers in Ohio and Texas before landing in New York in 1950; he also worked as a writer, performance artist and fine art photographer. But the writings were published in small-press publications, the photographs are hard to find, and the performance pieces—with a couple of exceptions—were not recorded. «Flaming Creatures» (1963) was his most notorious film, not only because it convincingly broke a number of taboos but because it was banned practically everyplace it was shown.
